Bird Studies Canada (Operating as Birds Canada/Oiseaux Canada) is Canada's leading national charitable organization dedicated to bird science and conservation. Our mission is to conserve wild birds through sound science, on-the-ground actions, innovative partnerships, and public engagement. Volunteers are at the heart of Birds Canada's work for birds. Each year, 50,000+ volunteers share their time and bird sightings through research programs. In 2018, volunteer contributed 946,000+ hours. Birds Canada monitors the health of Canada's birds through population studies on targeted species or groups of birds, including Species at Risk, with ongoing surveys of Canada's owl's loons, shorebirds, forest birds, marsh wildlife, and more. Birds Canada collects, stores, and analyzes vital data for programs such as breeding bird atlases, eBird Canada, Project FeederWatch, Great Backyard Bird Count, and the Christmas Bird Count. Birds Canada is an international leader in migration ecology with programs such as the Motus Wildlife Tracking System, a hemispheric initiative to track migratory birds and other animals using radio telemetry. Birds Canada co-leads Canada's Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas Program, a volunteer-driven initiative to conserve a network of sites that provides essential bird habitat. Birds Canada provides community engagement and education opportunities for all ages and skill levels e.g. Schoolyard Bird Blitz and Toronto Bird Celebration.
