(See website - "What We Do") In every country where MCC works, we partner with local churches and organizations with similar values. Together we work in three areas: Relief: Meeting people's immediate needs for survival during times of crisis, such a hurricane or war. We also focus on helping communities prepare for and respond to disasters. Development: Strengthening people's long-term access to food and water, health care and education. Our programs also help people find ways to support their families. Peace: Teaching conflict transformation skills, supporting peace education, advocating for justice an encouraging people to work together despite their differences. Political Activities Description Political Activities Description MCC's purpose is to respond to basic human needs and work for peace and justice in Canada and around the world. In support of its program work in the area of disaster/war relief, in the past year MCC wanted the Government of Canada to increase humanitarian assistance for displaced peoples in the Middle East and elsewhere, and invest in non-military means of addressing insecurity in Syria and Iraq. MCC wanted the Government of Canada to also invest in grassroots peacebuilding efforts globally. MCC wanted the government to speak out against military detention of children in Palestine/Israel and ongoing occupation and to also examine the human rights implications for Canadian/Israeli trade relationships. In support of its program work in the area of social services, in the past year MCC wanted th Government of Canada to strengthen accountability for Canadian resource extraction companies and to work to implement an independent ombuds-person for the extractives' sector. In addition, MCC wanted the Government of Canada to increase its foreign aid budget and strengthen support for small-holder farmers; to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP); and to invest in criminal justice reform, especially, to examine jury selection, rural crime and discrimination. Finally, MCC wanted the Government of Canada to strengthen its refugee resettlement and integration efforts, and to ensure that backlogs, wait times, and other policy hurdles are addressed.
